Unit 19: Assignment

 Unit 19.1: Assignment (Julian)

Task One

Script writing is one of the biggest roles as they have a lot of responsibilities on their shoulders.Scriptwriters must be able to create story lines and make sure within the storyline that the audience is engaged with it. Scripts are like blue prints; they are the structure to the film or tv show. Without scripts actors wouldn't know what to say, costume designers wouldn't know what to make ect. Scripts are the communication within the company that holds it together.Within any media company the most important person is the script writer, he/she is the person who has the remote within the company, because being a scriptwriter is so important it takes a lot of practice to even get into the industry, let alone a company. To be able to get into the script writing company one of the most important things to do is to start with classes, within classes you are able to have other people opinions and criticism which can help you decided what is your best next move, you are also able to read your work out to people this helps a lot as when you read it out loud you can have a sense of how the film/tv show will play out.

An example of how the conventions of a film screenplay can be used to a good effect would be “Joker” by Todd Phillips. This movie is about the joker from the DC films but this one has no connection to them at all, as this was set in the past (1981). It shows the true story of the joker in the real world.

In this opening we can see how Todd has utilized his conventions by having instructions, slug lines, for the editor at the end, here he wants the editor to fade in at the beginning.

As the scene starts, it starts off with a slug line, this tells where the scene is placed, here it tells me that it will be interior which is inside and it is in a health office , it also tells us time which here it is morning.

Within the opening it is also very detailed this is very effective as it tells us how old roughly the actors should look, which is very helpful for different departments for example: makeup department ect. The opening paragraph is very important as it tells us the descriptions of the characters and especially how they should act/feel. This paragraph gives a clear vision for the actors, costume and makeup department on how the script writer(Todd) would want this scene to be filmed.
