Lesson One
"If you put someone in a room with no script to direct, they're just going to sit there. Writing scripts is the execution for a show. Then the director takes that and hires people. It's like trying to build a house without any bricks. You need a great script." John Patrick Shanley
I believe this quote is very straightforward because a script is like a foundation for a company, without a script everything will apart. With a script it allows everyone to understand what to do, for example: Actors get there script, yes they get it so they can learn their lines but also to understand what the character is like, they are able to get into the characters shoes and be them, actors also get stage direction which say which emotion to play out which they have to learn and portray to the audience. Another example would be casting directors, scripts are very important to them as they need to understand how actors they would need for each act or scene. Also they would need scripts as when doing auditions they can see who would fit best. This shows how scripts are very important within companies because not only the director and actors need them, they are not lines that actors need to learn, they are the very foundation to a films and series.
A good example of when a script is in the show "Friends". In the episode "The One Where Ross Finds Out" they are many ways i can portray how each department will be in need for a script.
Directors would use a script in this scene when the actors come on and off the stage,"The waiter comes over" here the director would making sure the actors come on and off the stage at the right time and that they are in the right places at all time. Another department could be the sound department, a script is very crucial this is because with a show like friends they have laughter played when something funny is said, example "drops phone into bucket at this point the audience would laugh but they would also play a recording of the laughter as the audience could always laugh at a wrong time and that could mess up the scene, another way it is crucial for them to have a script is because they also have stage direction which they have to follow ,"Dialing" here they would need to make sure that the audience would be able to hear the sound effect and to make sure that they are on que.
Scripts would be needed within the prop department as they would need to be able to have the right set and make sure that the props that are needed are on the set and that they look correct at the right time. "Bottle of wine glass2 is needed in this scene so they would need to make sure that it is on the set and that it is visible to the audience that it is a wine glass, they also have a big part of making sure that the set is correctly , for example is it interior or exterior? This will be shown on the script at the top.
Task Two
https://www.bbc.co.uk/writersroom/scripts
find a script and describe why one scene is so successful and why?
Monday 5th October
What is it? How do you format it? Example?
Slug lines are placed in script at the beginning of each script which explain what time and where the scene will be placed. it could start of with INT/EXT which means that this scene will in inside and outside.

Action lines go right underneath the sluglines, they are the lines which explain what the reader will hear and see at the end of the produced film. action lines are normally known as stage directions.

Dialogue is the text which actors will read to portray a story which the director has made to convey a different amount of reactions and emotions.Dialogue always goes underneath the Characters name. when writing dialogue you must make sure that the characters ID is capitalized and has to be in the center, the dialogue would go underneath it. When writing the characters ID it doesn't have to be the full name of the character it could be a short name or alias.
Voice Over (V.O)
Voice over is when an actor is normally speaking over the action, but cannot be heard by the other actors, so someone who does a voice over is like a narrator.
Off Screen (O.S)
Off screen is when an actor is talking and can be heard by every other actor in the scene, but they cannot be seen within the shot by the audience and actors too. most times writers will write O.S but they might also write O.C for off camera. some examples of extensions could be , a character making a surprise entrance or an announcement on a loudspeaker.
Parentheticals are directions to which the actor must do, they will always be very detailed and must portrayed and performed just as it says. When writing a script the parentheticals will be put directly underneath the characters id, they will also always be written in capital letters. Some examples of parentheticals are: LAUGHING, ANGRY,CHEERFUL. They can also include actions which the actor can perform whilst speaking.
transitions are always written in the far right of the page, they explain how the end of the scene will change, it will say how the would like the scene to transition from one to the other. it would look like this:
subheaders
shots
montage
chryons
end of act
